Why

This remote area of Indonesia offers great weather and fun surf for people of all levels. If you aren’t looking for the traditional barrels found throughout most of Indonesia but want long waves and a mellow atmosphere T-Land Resort is the perfect fit for you!

How

For international flights, you will need to travel to Ngurah Rai international Airport in Bali (Denpasar) or Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Jakarta. There are regular and direct flights from Bali and Jakarta to Kupang.

Two airlines are the ones which we recommend when flying into Kupang airport: Garuda Indonesia and Lion Air.

In 2016, the company Wings Air (Lion Air operating between islands) has scheduled a daily flight between Kupang and Rote Island so there are two options for arriving in T-Land Resort:

By Sea: Our guide will pick you up at the El Tari airport in Kupang to leave you at the hotel to have arest.

The following morning we will go to the port of Kupang to take the fast Ferry (VIP class) departing at 8:30 am. The journey by sea takes about one hour and thirty minutes.

By Air: To avoid spending the night in Kupang, both Garuda Indonesia and Lion Air morning flights would connect with the only daily flight from Kupang to Rote at 15:05 lasting 30 minutes.

For both options, once at the port or airport in Rote you will be picked up by T-land Resort staff, who will take you directly to their complex, where you will be greeted by the management team. And from there on, out to surf!

On the return journey, due to the Ferry schedules, it is not necessary to spend the night in Kupang.

About Rote

The Indonesian archipelago boasts the most beautiful waves in the world. But surfing destinations are often over-crowded as a result of their own success. Due to its independence from Eastern Timor in 2002, Rote has kept away from tourism.

One of the most eastern Indonesian islands Rote is situated right in the core of the Lesser Sunda Islands just 500 km. away from Australia. Found in the middle of the ocean this small tropical island offers the visitor a paradisiacal landscape, perfect white-sand beach postcards, crystal-clear turquoise waters and stunning sunsets.

Rote, where time seems to have long stopped, represents that virgin beauty so difficult to find in a world of fast modernization. Rote’s local population converted to Christianity in the XVIII century. They live in huts with thatch roofs and bamboo walls. They are welcoming, kind and peaceful people who live of their land as well as fishing and harvesting seaweed. Ba’a, Rote’s capital, along with the rest of the island presents a palm-tree and coconut-tree landscape. Its huge extension of desert beaches and its extraordinary sea life make Rote a unique destination where you can find neither western distractions nor car and bike noises. Thanks to the lack of light pollution we can watch a sky full of star every night. Local kids run up to the visitor to greed them with a loud “Hello”. Being in Rote is like watching out from a small window into the past.

The Surf

If you dream of Paradise, if your search for the perfect wave hasn´t finished yet, in Rote island you will find a world-class set of waves to enjoy with family and friends. Away from crowdsfound in other Indonesian islands, it offers the consistence and quality that makes the indonesian archipelago one of the best surfing spots in the world. Rote receives from March to November consistent South-Southwest swell, coming from South africa towards the South of Australia, during the dry season (winter in the Southern Hemisphere), that is when the Indian Ocean turns into a Factory of waves and dreams. During this season, the winds are off-shore, East-Southeast trade winds. And unlike in other islands in the Indonesian archipelago, you will not find jealous locals protecting their waves from visitors. The local population is very friendly and affable, with only a few surfers in the water.

T-Land

The T-Land (known locally as “Besialu”) is the main wave on Rote.  It is one of the longest left (600ft-1.200ft) and most perfect waves in Indonesia. Its quality and consistency allows you to surf from 2ft (0,5m) to 15ft (5m).

It has three sections, known as The Peak, The Pyramid and The Mountain, allowing different surfing levels. It is often compared with G-Land (Grajagan) in Java, although more accessible and maneuverable. It breaks at all tides and is off-shore during the dry season. If you want to save long walks under the sun, T-Land Resort offers you the best location for accessing the wave, their boats are located just one step away from your bungalow in front of the reef channel.

The Bommie

Located just in front of T-Land Resort, this short right with one of the easiest take-offs of the island. It breaks in a deep reef, it is a fun wave and a very good choice in low tide with big swells.

Boa

This right peak is about 10 minutes by land South of Nemberala village, with easy access from the beach, but it can also be reached by boat. It is a powerful wave with a fast take off and a good tube section. It breaks at mid tide. It is better with mild wind, very early in the morning or just before the sunset.

Suckies

Suckies also know as Sucky Mamas or Peanuts (local name Sakunamo), it´s 10 minutes by boat, which is the only Access. Located in Fedok village, north of Nemberala, and barely visible from the coast it is a short, intense and powerful right. It might be the best right of the island with good barrels and prefers a mid to high tide. You´ll hardly find anybody there.

Do’o

Do’o is accessed only by boat and is about 20 minutes from T-Land Resort. An uninhabited island with a hollow right, breaking off the end of a sharp and shallow coral reef it breaks best at mid tide. Good conditions here are when there is an onshore wind at T-Land. It is intended for intermediate and expert surf levels.

Squeelers

In the same Nemberala beach, we find a safe and fun wave, perfect for beginners. A right and left wave breaking at half and high tide on reef 100 meters from shore. Another alternative for intermediate surfers when there are big swells.
